When and how do you allow the customer to co-create your service? In an increasingly digital world, customers now have the potential to perform parts of service that your employees previously did and thus give your firm savings in manpower and turnaround times. At McDonalds', a self-service ordering kiosk allows the customer to salivate, go back and forth between his meal choices, and thus thoroughly enjoy the ordering experience; as opposed to the rushed experience at the counter wherein he needs to be very sure of what he wantsAt a grocery self-service checkout, on the other hand, the experience is poor as he struggles to scan the bar codes and succeeds often with multiple attempts with each itemAt the airline check-in kiosk or seat selection, the experience is good as he gets to choose the seat while fully having a view of what areas of the airline look occupiedAt the automated baggage drop, on the other hand, the experience is poor as you have to lift your bags, place them on the belt, and scan the passport. In contrast, previously at the manned counter, you got some support from the staff sitting across especially if you were old or were traveling with a baby.Automating tasks in a service without much thought into how the service will be used by the customer may lead to manpower savings but not necessarily to an improved customer experience. For the customer to enjoy the experience, the task being outsourced to the customer must tap into his psychology and be a source of joy ( salivating over the order, full view of the airplane)ORthe solution must use an additional layer of technology that makes it easier and faster for the customer. For eg, Uniqlo has a self-checkout option that uses RFID to magically detect the items in your basket to auto-populate your bill as compared to the grocery checkout wherein you are playing an inexperienced version of the convenience store cashier.Thoughtful automation can elevate experience and lead you to savings, but before throwing technology at a problem it's imperative to map out how the customer journey looks before and after the automation and see if the objectives are being met.#design #psychology #digitisation #servicedesign #customerjourney #automation

We started with a Content Management System that services 75,000,000 web pages. Why does that matter? Because the platform is ubiquitous to marketing teams around the world. It has tens-of-thousands of templates to choose from. Thousands of plugins that can make the kiosk behave in new ways. And you can choose from any number of marketing teams to make the kiosk behave exactly the way you want your brand to be portrayed.... the latest version of the NorthStar kiosk is the most powerful self-service kiosk on the planet. We spent a lot of time analyzing the competitive market and seeing where kiosks fall apart. If you've ever been on a Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. ship, and used their iPads (4,000+ people a week use them), that was version 1 of our product.Version 2 has been in quiet development - and was designed to solve some very key pain points for both the IT team, but more importantly, the marketing team.Because we designed the system to be used by the marketing team of enterprise restaurant and grocery store groups - it is very accessible. Some items it can do: - Run Google Analytics directly on the kiosk. Track every promo, discount, pop-up, picture click, and how long your customers / guests were on each page. Now you can drive the user experience! You are a data-driven marketing team, right? - Use any WordPress plugin. Perform A/B testing to see promos / pictures / layouts perform better. Rapidly register customers for loyalty programs. Transfer orders from online ordering into in-store kiosks. - Run on any touchscreen hardware. Ultimately our application is a web browser - so you can run it on any size monitor, big or small, and it will automatically scale up or down. If you like Android, or Windows, or iOS - all of those work with our platform. - Build your own WordPress plugin. If you can dream it up, your IT team can extend the kiosk to do anything you would like. - Interface to NorthStar or any other POS system. I happen to think that the Custom Business Solutions NorthStar product is the best - but if you want to use your legacy product, or a competitive product, that's ok. Our kiosk will work just fine.
