There's a varying range of case study implementation tips available to you. Select from the list below for more information:

  • Ticket to Class

Use the case study as a ticket to enter the class.

    • Assign the entire or a part of the case study for the students to complete outside of class time. Students should have their part ready if they want to enter class.
    • When only assigning a part of the Case Study, answer the remaining case study questions together as a group for an in-class learning activity or place the students into small groups and have them complete the remainder of the case study.

    Rationale

This learning method builds critical thinking by hearing ideas and reasoning from peers and it provides an effective way to ensure students come to class well-prepared.

  • Lecture Material for Faculty

Select a case study that is appropriate for lecture and use itas your lecture material while completing the case study as a group.

    Rationale

This is a great way for students to practice high level questions in preparation for HESI exams or faculty created exams. Students get engaged in the lecture and discussion, while building their critical thinking. Also it saves time preparing course materials.

  • Classroom Learning Activity

Break the students into small groups and have them take turns with a question and present their case. Then let the other groups provide rationale for why they agree or disagree.

    Rationale

This activity provides a learning opportunity for students to hear the rationales of their peers and build critical thinking.

  • Exam Preparation or Ticket to Test

Select a few appropriate case studies that’ll be covered in the upcoming exam. Use the assigned case studies as a ticket to test. Students must complete the assigned case studies with a required passing percentage before they can sit for their exam. For example, you might allow a student two attempts to score an 80% or greater. This will serve as their ticket to test.

    Rationale

It’s important for students to have frequent exposure and practice with high level question that case studies provide.

  • Remediation: (Individual Student or Cohort)

Use the HESI data from the individual student reports to identify an individual student's or cohort’s weakness. Assign the appropriate case study(s) to the student or cohort to complete as remediation or as group learning activity.

    Rationale

This method provides students with an opportunity to improve areas of weakness and prepare for future exams and NCLEX while allowing the faculty to identify program gaps and make necessary curriculum changes.

  • Focused Clinical

Assign a case study based on the clinical focus topic (as it relates to lecture) to be completed prior to the clinical experience and use pre or post conference as a time to discuss and/or complete the case study. Have students compare/contrast their actual patient care to the case study information.

    Rationale

This exercise allows students the ability to build a clinical - classroom connection, while comparing and contrasting fosters critical thinking.

  • Clinical or Lab Make-Up

Assign several case studies to complete for students who don’t attend clinical or lab. Allow two to three attempts with a passing score of 100%. No grade is awarded, rather they just fulfil their clinical or lab requirement. This can be their ticket to attend the next scheduled clinical/lab day.

    Rationale

This method provides an example for how important clinical or lab is to learning and deters students from missing valuable clinical or lab time.

  • Documentation Practice

After completing the case study get the students to document the patient’s clinical data as a practice exercise.

    Rationale

This exercise allows students the ability to build a clinical - classroom connection and provides them with some experience in documentation skills.
