What 49ers QB Brock Purdy Learned from Mac Jones While Sidelined by Toe Injury
The typical dynamic in an NFL team is that the backup quarterback learns from the starter. However, during his recovery from a turf toe injury, Brock Purdy gained valuable insights from Mac Jones, the 49ers' starting quarterback.
"I definitely learned from him in terms of being efficient," Purdy shared on KNBR's 'Murph and Markus.' He explained how Jones' approach to the game, such as taking what the defense gives and finding ways to score, even if it's a field goal after a checkdown, has been instrumental in his development.
Purdy, who missed eight games this season due to his injury, expressed gratitude for the symbiotic relationship he's developed with Jones. "It's little things like that that are crucial for playing in the NFL," he said. "I hope we can continue to push each other and help each other as we move forward."
Jones' performance in his fill-in role was impressive, keeping the 49ers afloat with a 5-3 record in his starts. His efficiency was notable, averaging 215.1 passing yards per game with a career-high 69.6 completion percentage.
Purdy also admired Jones' demeanor and charisma. "He's hilarious," Purdy said. "His personality and charisma are awesome. It's been beneficial for me to see a quarterback who can play with fun and joy."
Despite not having eye-popping individual statistics, the 49ers have thrived since Purdy's return, winning three games and securing a playoff spot. With the lessons learned during his absence, Purdy is determined to pile more wins as the team strives for an NFL playoff spot.
