The Arctic Mulan tanker, carrying fuel from the sanctioned Russian plant, docked at Beihai LNG in China on Friday. This move, tracked by Bloomberg's vessel data, marks a significant development in the ongoing Russia-China energy trade.
But here's where it gets controversial: China's import of sanctioned Russian LNG, despite UK sanctions on specialized tankers and the Beihai terminal, suggests a deliberate challenge to Western efforts to isolate Russia's energy exports.
And this is the part most people miss: the continued trade from Arctic LNG 2, which began this summer, indicates that both Russia and China are unperturbed by the sanctions. In fact, China is estimated to have received at least ten LNG cargoes from the project, as Beijing and Moscow grow bolder in their defiance of Western sanctions.
Arctic LNG 2, operated by Novatek, faced challenges finding buyers after Western sanctions were imposed last year. However, the project has roared back to life in August, sending a clear message that Russia is no longer waiting and is actively testing the limits of the Trump Administration's willingness to sanction China, its largest LNG customer.
All exports from Arctic LNG 2 have been directed to China, as the country ceased purchasing U.S. LNG amid the ongoing trade tensions.
