What is the most common round cake pan? ›

Welsh recommends a nine-inch pan as the standard for a round cake, so purchase two that will come in handy when you're preparing most layer cake recipes, such as our Carrot Cake with White Chocolate Frosting.

For example, if the recipe calls for an 8-inch round and you are using a 9-inch round, your pan has more surface area exposed and the cake will probably bake faster. If the recipe calls for a 9-inch round and you are using an 8-inch round, the batter will be deeper and need to bake a little longer.

Typically square, rectangular, or circular, traditional cake pans are the standard choice for baking many different kinds of cakes. While traditional cake pans come in a variety of sizes, they all have high, straight sides and flat bottoms, yielding cakes that you can torte or trim to make level, and then layer.

Professional bakers recommend baking in anodized aluminum pans because they heat up quickly and cook more evenly than their glass counterparts.

A standard cake mix will make two 9" rounds, but you don't have to follow the rules. Use a springform pan (which makes for a taller, prouder cake), a Bundt pan for instant decoration, an extra-long loaf pan or two standard ones, or a muffin tin to make cupcakes.

An 8” square pan and 9” round pan can be used interchangeably for cake and bar recipes. A recipe written for a 9” x 13” pan can also be made in two 9” round pans; one 9” round and one 8” round, or two 8” round pans.

How full do you fill a cake pan? To leave room for your cakes to rise, we suggest filling your pans no more than 2/3 full with batter (a little more than half way). Some recipes might state differently, but this is a good rule of thumb for cakes, cupcakes, muffins and sheet cakes.

Using a sheet pan to bake is by far the easiest and quickest way! The ideal sheet pan for making a cake would be flat and have sides that are at least 1 inch high.

How long to bake a cake in a 9 inch round pan? ›

The general rule of thumb when baking is “the bigger the pan, the lower the temperature”. You bake a 9” round chocolate cake for about 30-35 minutes at 350° F (175° C). However, if you were putting the same recipe in a 14” pan, you would need to lower the temperature to 325° F (162° C) for 50-55 minutes.

The most common sizes 8 or 9 inches, but they come in a huge variety of sizes, which can be used to make cakes of varying tiers or size. Above is a list of the number of servings for some of the most common cake pan sizes.

The taller the cake, the thinner you'll likely want to slice, though. Based on cakes that are between 3 and 6-inches high, a 6-inch round cake will yield 5-11 servings; an 8-inch round will yield12-16 servings; and a 9-inch roundwill produces 12-16 servings.

8 inch cakes can be sensibly served to 14 people cutting each slice at about 2 1⁄4 inches across the back. 2 1⁄4 inches is about the length of the spoon part of a tablespoon. 8 inch cakes can also be cut event style. Cutting an 8 inch cake event style can serve up to 24 people.

9×3 inch tube pans are the standard size. I have a few that are 8 inch and 10 inch and most recipes using tube pans fit nicely in all.
