NREMT Overview
NREMT stands for National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. The NREMT is a non-profit organization that makes sure EMTs have the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in their profession.
The NREMT administers different emergency medical professional tests like the following:
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
- Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

EMT Cognitive Exam
This is the first portion of the exam. This portion is computer adaptive, which means the test will introduce harder questions based on how you are progressing through the exam.
You will be given 120 minutes to answer 70 – 120 multiple-choice questions. There are 5 topic areas covered on the exam:
- Airway, Respiration, & Ventilation – 18-22%
- Cardiology & Resuscitation – 20-24%
- Trauma – 14-18%
- Medical; Obstetrics & Gynecology – 27-31%
- EMS Operations – 10-14%
This portion of the exam is administered by the NREMT. This is the portion of the exam most people are looking for an EMT practice test for.

EMT Psychom*otor Exam
This is the second portion of the exam. Candidates will be asked to perform live assessments while expected to meet a certain set of standards while taking this test.
This test is different than most tests students have taken in the past since it takes place in a live setting and is very hands-on. The following topics may be covered on this portion of the exam:

- Joint immobilization
- Cardiac arrest management
- Bleeding control
- Shock management
- Spine immobilization

The time limit and number of questions will vary. This test is not administered by the NREMT, but instead is administered by the state EMS office in which you reside.

EMT Exam Administration
Both the EMT cognitive and psychom*otor exam are administered throughout the year. Since the 2 exams are administered by different organizations, the process to register is different.
If you are looking to register for the cognitive portion of the exam, you can follow these specific steps.
If you are looking to register for the psychom*otor portion of the exam, you will need to visit your state EMS website and register there.
EMT Eligibility
There are specific requirements you must meet in order to sit for the EMT exam. The most important requirement is having completed a state approved EMT course. This course must meet the standards of the NREMT.
In addition to completing a state approved course, you must also have a current CPR-BLS certificate (basic life support).
EMT Exam Scoring
The minimum passing standards are set by the National Registry Board of Directors. The minimum passing standards are reviewed every 3 years. The cognitive and psychom*otor exams use different scoring methods since they are administered differently.
The cognitive exam is scored on a scale from 70-120. The psychom*otor exam is more subjective, but each action is rewarded a point if done correctly.
The two tests are combined and evaluated together to determine if a candidate meets the passing standards. You can expect to wait 24-48 hours to receive your NREMT test results. You can find your results on the NREMT website.
