The Highlander remake is gearing up, and the cast is getting a serious upgrade! Get ready, because the iconic story of immortals battling through time is about to get a fresh, new spin. According to reports from THR, the cast is expanding with the addition of Kevin McKidd, Siobhán Cullen, Jun Jong-seo, and Nassim Lyes.
For those unfamiliar, the story centers around Connor MacLeod, played by Henry Cavill, a Scottish Highlander who discovers he's an immortal warrior. He's not alone, though. He'll be joined by other immortals, including Russell Crowe as a swordsman named Ramirez, who helps MacLeod navigate his new reality. The cast also includes Karen Gillan as MacLeod’s wife, Marisa Abela as his modern-day love interest, Djimon Hounsou as an immortal warrior, and Jeremy Irons as the leader of a secret order called The Watchers.
Adding to the mix, Max Zhang from Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy will be in an undisclosed role, and WWE superstar Drew McIntyre is set to play Angus MacLeod, Cavill’s character's brother.
Now, let's dive into the new additions. Siobhán Cullen will play a police psychiatrist who gets involved with the immortals, while Jun Jong-seo will be part of The Watchers. Nassim Lyes is set to play an immortal who is after MacLeod. And as for Kevin McKidd, well, his role is still a mystery. But wouldn't it be amazing if he played an immortal Roman soldier?
But here's where it gets controversial... Production was originally slated to begin in the fall, but a training injury for Cavill has pushed the start date to early 2026. The film will be shot in Scotland, England, and Hong Kong.
And this is the part most people miss... The film is aiming for some seriously impressive action sequences. Bautista has teased that the project will have John Wick-level action. He even stated, “I was so blown away by the script because, without saying too much, this is such a great reboot. We’re still paying tribute and giving a nod to the original, but making it new and fresh and exciting, and also just universe-building. It’s just so much bigger than the original.”
Some might ask, does Highlander even need a remake? The original film is a cult classic, and remakes can be tricky. However, this remake has major franchise aspirations, and director Chad Stahelski has the chance to build a strong mythology from the start. Plus, with Cavill at the helm, there's a lot of excitement surrounding this project, especially since he's moved on from roles like Superman and The Witcher.
