Everyone knows that Dark Souls 3 can be a brutally challenging game. Sometimes you might come across an area that is being particularly difficult to manage and you need a way to give yourself an edge. That's where soul farming comes in.

Farming for souls is a great way to get the souls needed to level up and give yourself that edge you need, especially in later levels where leveling up costs a ton of souls. This list will break down some of the best, and some of the worst, areas in the game to farm for souls.

Updated on February 25th, 2022 by Geoffrey Martin: With the exciting release of Elden Ring now upon us, many people might also be jumping into FromSoftware's back catalog which, of course, includes the magnificent Dark Souls 3. Dark Souls 3, like the other Soulsborne games, features many locations to farm for souls in order to level up and get stronger overall. While soul farming certainly isn't something everyone does in the game, it can help when you need to buff up your character for a challenging boss fight ahead. New soul farming locations are found often by players and here are a couple more to consider.

12 The Sewer Centipedes

Dark Souls 3: 12 Best Locations For Soul Farming (1)

With a name like sewer centipedes, you can probably expect something grotesque and harrowing. The area that houses the sewer centipedes is not a pleasant area, at least in terms of aesthetics. Fortunately, what it lacks in beautiful ambiance, it more than makes up for in soul farming.

This location is near the Distant Manor Bonfire and is underneath Irythill. It's not a particularly tough room to find so long as you are familiar with the location in general. There are a bunch of these creepy crawlies and each one of them typically drops 750 souls. Simply kill as many as you can, head back to the Distant Manor Bonfire, rinse and repeat.

11 Drakeblood Knight

Dark Souls 3: 12 Best Locations For Soul Farming (2)

Archdragon Peak is certainly one of those locations in Dark Souls 3 that has become synonymous with a steep challenge level. This becomes ever true when you face off against a Drakeblood Knight, one of the first brutal enemies in the area. Unlike other soul farming areas in the game, the Drakeblood Knight is a solo adversary, however, he drops a whopping 4,000 souls.

The Drakeblood Knight is actually a creature that is summoned upon getting to the area. He may take quite a few hits to take down, but the large soul count is absolutely worth the effort it takes.

10 Entrance To Anor Londo

Dark Souls 3: 12 Best Locations For Soul Farming (3)

One of the fastest and most rapid places to grind is at the frozen gates of Anor Londo, just near the bonfire at the top of the spinning elevator. Running up to the top of the stairs will let you face two knights with a sword and spear each, who can be killed quite easily with backstabs or through being knocked off the stairs.

The reason this area is so easy is that you also get reliable item drops from them, which can include anything from equipment to various forms of titanite. Selling these grants even more souls when you make your way back to Firelink Shrine, and the bonfire’s so close that you can reset it and grind these knights extremely fast.

9 Bodies Of The Smouldering Lake

Dark Souls 3: 12 Best Locations For Soul Farming (4)

One of the optional areas some players might not find at first is the Smouldering Lake, which can be accessed by breaking and climbing down the bridge next to the boss room for High Lord Wolnir. Past the small temple is a large field of mud with a titanic worm and crossbow firing at you, trying to block you from tons of bodies full of consumable soul items.

This does mean you can only access it once, but it’s still worth visiting during each of your playthroughs for a huge boost. Lying near the worm is also the Shield of Want, an extremely effective shield that also raises all the souls you get from killing enemies and bosses, making it a great item for those looking to grind elsewhere.

8 Inside The Profaned Capital

Dark Souls 3: 12 Best Locations For Soul Farming (5)

If you want to quickly kill a large number of tiny enemies, the Profaned Capital has you covered. There are tons of zombified priests around this area that can only strike with slow fireball attacks, all of which can be quickly dodged to kill them in only a few hits.

You can frequently reset these at the bonfire inside Yhorm the Giant’s boss room, and harvest many enemies in the small temple quite quickly before coming back. Going through the hallway to the rest of the temple might be tedious, but it’s an incredibly effective source of souls early on in the game.

7 Outside The Church of Yorshka

Dark Souls 3: 12 Best Locations For Soul Farming (6)

Another valuable space to collect souls is by the Church of Yorshka in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. The Church, as well as the Pontiff Sulyvahn bonfire, will give you access to several tall frozen guards and priests with flaming spears that are mostly spread out, meaning you can backstab and swing at them incredibly fast before running back to a variety of different bonfires.

If you want something cheesier, an elevator shortcut directly forward from the Church bonfire will also lead you to many dogs and enemies, most of which will follow you towards the elevator before they fall to their death. It won’t be as many souls as the tall guards, but it’s still a fun way to get souls without needing to fight.

6 Kiln Of The First Flame

Dark Souls 3: 12 Best Locations For Soul Farming (7)

Bosses can be tough to reliably grind against, especially since the game’s been out for so long and fewer players are on the servers now. If you still need a place to reliably put your summon sign, though, fighting against the Soul Of Cinder will likely give you the best chance of frequently fighting a boss that grants tons of souls.

Just drop your sign and wait, and since this boss is encountered to finish any playthrough, you’ll be more likely to find someone who needs you than most other areas. If you don’t feel like taking on such a long fight, the Dancer of the Boreal Valley and final bosses of the DLC areas are also pretty high-traffic areas.

5 Archdragon Peak

Dark Souls 3: 12 Best Locations For Soul Farming (8)

Archdragon Peak is a great place to rack up a huge amount of souls in a short amount of time but there is a prerequisite that needs to be completed before using this farming method.

From the Dragonkin Mausoleum Bonfire, the first room you enter will have a Serpent-Sorcerer that will infinitely summon Drakeblood Knights that can be farmed for 4,000 souls each and can net you one million souls in under an hour. It's advised that you kill Havel the Rock before using this method so the sorcerer can't summon him.

4 The Ringed City

Dark Souls 3: 12 Best Locations For Soul Farming (9)

Dark Souls 3's final DLC, The Ringed City, ended up being a great place to farm souls during the end game thanks to a specific enemy that's found here: Ringed Knights.

From the Ringed City Streets bonfire, you can find four Ringed Knights that can be farmed for about 15,000 souls each, even more, when equipped with items that increase soul yield. This method will have you racking up souls quickly, but this is one of the more difficult methods of farming since the Ringed Knights are very tough to kill.

3 Lothric Castle Bonfire

Dark Souls 3: 12 Best Locations For Soul Farming (10)

While you can get a ton of souls from going through the entirety of Lothric Castle, if you want to farm souls, a good idea would be to stay near the Lothric Castle bonfire, which is the first bonfire in the area.

RELATED: Dark Souls 3: 10 Things You Never Noticed In Lothric Castle

All you have to do for this method is kill the knight right next to the bonfire, rest, and repeat. That's it. It's a surprisingly effective method of soul farming that could potentially net hundreds of thousands of souls in less than 30 minutes.

2 Grand Archives

Dark Souls 3: 12 Best Locations For Soul Farming (11)

The Grand Archives is a sprawling, multi-level location full of enemies that give plenty of souls when defeated, making it a great place to go soul farming. Farming in the Grand Archives is the slowest method of farming, but it's certainly effective.

Just start at the bottom of the archives and fight your way to the top, killing every enemy along the way. Once at the top, Homeward Bone back to the beginning and start all over. Each run nets about 100,000 souls even without soul-boosting items equipped.

1 Above The Grand Archives

Dark Souls 3: 12 Best Locations For Soul Farming (12)

Arguably the best way to get the most amount of souls in the shortest time, the roof of the Grand Archives is home to three Ascended Winged Knights that provide almost 30,000 souls each, meaning that with the right equipment, you'll be earning about 100,000 souls per run.

Access to this roof can be gained by either taking the elevator up from the Archives or by going directly across from the Twin Princes boss room. In addition to the number of souls earned per run, each run is quite short so you'll be raking in the souls very quickly.
