Mission
Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc is a 501(c)3 charity their mission is to provide thoroughbred racehorses in Puerto Rico and the surrounding Caribbean Islands a safe passage into good adoptive homes and lifetime aftercare situations when their racing days are over. Thoroughbreds are versatile, athletic and possess extraordinary heart, which allows them to move into second careers and, in doing so, enriches the lives of people in numerous ways. CTA services are the bridge from racing to safe aftercare homes via a process that includes: Retirement from racing, Rehabilitation, Retraining, and Re-homing both in the islands and via return to the U.S. mainland.
Notes from the nonprofit
Over 1,000 U.S. bred thoroughbreds race in Puerto Rico annually. Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc provides the bridge to help these horses with their racing days are over. CTA aims to retire, rehabilitate, re-train & re-home (adopt) horses to good homes. Because of the limited number of qualified adoptive homes in Puerto Rico and limited resources, we aim to return the majority of horses back to the North America for retirement placement. This is no small expense, costing $3,500+ to pay for the required USDA quarantine and flight back to the mainland and van ride (along with other expenses); however, this is a very necessary expense to ensure racehorses receive the dignified, healthy and happy home they earned in their racing careers. Please consider a Federal and Puerto Rico tax-exempt donation to help racehorses reach good retirement homes. Thank you!

What we aim to solve
SOURCE: Self-reported by organization
More than 1,000 U.S. thoroughbreds race annually in Puerto Rico. Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc is the only aftercare organization on the island. Our primary goals are to retire, rehabilitate & re-train horses and then place/adopt them into good homes. Without our services, hundreds of healthy horses suitable for "second careers" would be euthanized. With our aftercare services, the horses can go onto be riding horses, companions, equine-assisted therapy horses, and so on. Our biggest challenge is the high poverty rate on the island (~ 43%), paucity of qualified adoptive homes for retired racehorses and very limited resources for thoroughbreds as well (e.g., adequate stabling & turnout, quality hay & other horse needs, availability of equine veterinarians and blacksmiths on the island, and so on). Thus, the majority of horses must be flown back to the U.S. mainland (where the majority were bred and most also raced prior to being flown to Puerto Rico). Travel home includes a weekl

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc's primary goal is to serve the needs of horses transitioning from racing to non-racing homes in order to reduce unnecessary euthansia and/or suffering of horses at the end of their racing careers.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc works to educate and inform the industry about aftercare and the needs of horses when their racing days are over. Also, we must raise the funds via grants, industry support, and private and cooperate donations to care for the horses during their time with CTA and to transport them to forever homes.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc has a group of Volunteers and Board Members that, together, comprise the knowledge and skill sets needed to run a successful not-for-profit and horse rehabilitation and re-training program. One can learn more about the primary team here: https://www.ctahorse.com/team/
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
CTA retired a total of 90 thoroughbreds in 2 years (2017 & 2018 combined). In 2018, CTA retired 48 thoroughbreds from racing and placed 43 horses into good homes. Another big accomplishment is CTA was on the frontline of Hurricane Maria relief in 2017 and 2018. In the aftremath of the hurricane, CTA distributed the following equine relief, which reached Puerto Rico via air and sea:
• 98 tons of alfalfa/timothy
• 112 tons of feed
• 30 tons of shavings
• 28 pallets of medical and equine supplies
• 10 pallets of relief supplies
• 56 tarps
Both during Hurricane relief and in our day-to-day efforts to provide aftercare services for horses, CTA has worked successfully with many organizations and individuals, including:
• Thoroughbred Charities of America
• The Jockey Club of America
• Brook Ledge / Horse America
• Airlines Jet Blue, Swift Air & Strat Air for getting supplies in under very difficult circ*mstances
• Ranch Aid
• American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP)
• Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co (OBS)
• Bonnie Heath Farm
• Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance
• Caribbean Horse Disaster Relief Fund (U.S. Equestrian Foundation, Equestrian Canada, Cayman Islands Equestrian Foundation)
• John Velasquez and wife Leona
• John Sykes of Woodford Thoroughbreds
• Charlotte Webber of Live Oak Stud
• TEVA & American Veterinary Medicine Association
• Humane Society of US
• Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation
• And countless individuals in the industry, racing fans and horse lovers who donated money and supplies
